Purederm Skin Solutions Make-up Remover Cleansing Towelettes

There have been many times over the years, where in a model arrives at work wearing a full face of makeup. I sometimes sigh at exasperation because some of these models do not abide by this simple rule: “Come To Work With A Clean Face”.

Most of the time I work on location with no proper amenities. Sometimes I am behind a black curtain backstage in a fashion show. If working in a proper studio I am pressed for time. When a full cleanse is not possible, this is where I pull out the cleansing wipes.

My favorite to use are the Argan Oil and Collagen Make-up Remover Cleansing Towelettes from  Purederm Skin Solutions.

There are two reasons why I use these two products:

  • These don’t have any other ingredients that might not work in tandem with most of my cosmetic products.
  • I am also cautious when it comes to using certain products that has vitamins, anti-aging ingredients, and exfoliating properties because the person I am working with might get a reaction. I do not want that to happen while I am at work causing unwanted delays.

I use the Collagen Make-up Remover Cleansing Towelettes when I am working with a person who has combination to oily skin. This way I am still able to effectively remove makeup and excess oil with out overstimulating production.

I use the Argan Oil  Make-up Remover Cleansing Towelettes when I am working with a person who has dry to normal skin. The minute amount of argan oil will leave the skin nicely moisturized.

The other main reason why I have this in my makeup kit every single time is because I frequently use the back of my hand as a working palette:

  • I mix different colored foundations on it.
  • I warm concealers on it.
  • I check the slip of eye pencils / gel eyeliners on it.
  • I  create lipstick shades and check if a lip liner is a match on it.

I used to use alcohol and tissue to remove them but they are not effective in fully removing cosmetic products. With the cleansing towelettes, my cleansing process is cut in half and I don’t get makeup stains on my clothes anymore.

Purederm has four other types of cleansing towelettes available namely: Peptide, Tea Tree, Q-10, and Vitamin. So you have an array of product types to choose from according to your needs and skin type.

~

Upon doing some research, I found that these cleaning towelettes are made by a Korean company named Adwin Korea Corp. The same company who makes Skinlite facial Masks. To read my blog about those facial masks, click here.

These cleansing wipes are available at Watson’s. They retail for Php 99. Do be on the look out because they go on sale once in a while, slashing the price 50% off *winks*.

VMV Hypoallergenics Id Monolaurin Gel

I was introduced to this products a few months back and I have been testing it out since then.

The first time I saw VMV Hypoallergenics Id Monolaurin Gel I passed over it because I read that it was primarily for sweat acne and acne treatment, which luckyly I don’t suffer from.

Years later, I was replenishing my stocks at the VMV Hypoallergenics store when the advisor asked me if I had tried this gel. I told her I have not because I don’t need it. The advisor knew I was a makeup artist and told me that this product is a perfect makeup base for people with oily skin types because it controls oil and mattifies the face with out drying it.

SOLD!

The VMV Hypoallergenics Id Monolaurin Gel  comes in a 120 ml blue bottle. You squeeze it, and the gel comes out. The amount of gel that comes out depends on how much pressure you exert unto the bottle. I was initially worried about spillage, but the bottle works like a vacuum, sucking in the gel once you stop squeezing it.

Upon first contact, the gel felt cool on my skin. It made me feel relaxed actually. I also felt my skin tighten but it was soft to the touch. That’s when I knew this product was controlling my oil without drying my skin.
Unlike some makeup bases in the market, this gel left my skin matte with out  the white cast!
I proceeded to apply some makeup on and it did not interfere with the slip and slide of the foundation.
I have been using this for the past few months on people who have oily skin (me included). Here’s what I have observed:
  • This is a good makeup base. Since this gel dries quickly, it needs to be applied on the skin as soon as it’s out of the bottle. It’s best to use fingers in doing so.
  • You don’t need to use as much as you think you do. A little bit of the product goes a long way and it’s best to use this on the main problem areas of the skin, i.e. T-zone.
  • If you use too much, flaking can occur. You’ll see white “dust like particles” sitting on top of the skin especially when you “layer” the gel over. You’d need to buff it off with a brush.
  • If you use too much, your foundation might not slip and slide easily. Remember, you’d need a little bit of moisture to make that foundation work.
  • This helps extend the wear of your makeup by inhibiting the oil production process of the skin by a few hours than in comparison when not using VMV Hypoallergenics Id Monolaurin Gel as a base.

The main active ingredients of this product are Monolaurin ( Gylceryl Laurate) and Glycerin. Monolaurin is derived from coconut oil, which is known for its antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. That why this is a good treatment for those who suffer from acne, sweat acne, ingrown hairs, waxing and shaving bumps. Glycerin is the ingredient that “locks in” moisture.

P.S.

Recently, my nephew from the US came over for a visit. Having  stayed under the sun a tad too much with out sunscreen he came up to me complaining about the discomfort of his sunburn. He asked me if I had anything that could be of help to rid him of the pain of the sunburn. I initially, said I didn’t have any. Fortunately around that time he was asking me, I was arranging my kit and I saw the blue bottle ofVMV Hypoallergenics Id Monolaurin Gel sticking out. I handed him the bottle and I told him to place a generous amount all over his face while I proceeded to apply the gel all over his back.

I had a hunch it might work.

He said the gel felt cool to the touch and the uncomfortable feeling of being “burnt” was alleviated instantly. He looked less uncomfortable too, which was a good sight. 24 hours later, no adverse side effects. This might be a good  aide in relieving the discomfort of sunburn. I was banking on the Monolaurin to work its anti-inflammatory power on him.

 Ingredients:

Alcohol, Aqua/Water/Eau, Glyceryl Laurate, Glycerin, Carbomer, Triethanolamine.

Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay

I like skin care products that are effective and multi purpose.

Left: Dermaclear Trans-foam Clay GREEN      Middle: Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay Pink        Right: Dermaclear Trans-foam Clay White

That’s why I like these products from Dr. Jart+.

The Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Tans-Foam Clay is a clay mask that you massage on your face and leave on to dry for three minutes. Feel it transform into a foaming facial wash when you rinse it off with warm water.

These three products were part of my New York stash when I was there in October of 2016. A gift from my good friend Nat.

Prior to getting Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Tans-Foam Clay, I had zero experience with clay masks because they are not available here. I was very excited to start using these on my self and “see” how they work.

I first tried this on my self for the first time when I arrived home from New York. I wanted to feel refreshed and hydrated after a long flight.

I chose to use Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay in Green. The clay had a very light green tint to it (The Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay in Pink has a light pink hue to it and the Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay in White is white.).I massaged a generous amount of the clay unto my skin. The clay appears white once applied unto the skin.

The clay felt cool on my skin. Minty. Refreshing. I also felt my skin tightening as the clay started to dry.

After three minutes, I washed my face with warm water. In circular motions, I gently rubbed the clay on my face, instantly transforming into foam! I continued massaging the lather unto my face for a couple of minutes before washing the product off completely.

Once dry, my skin started glowing and it felt soft and hydrated.  To my surprise, I did not loose the “tight” feeling. I followed this up with my regular skin care regimen and I was happy with my results.

A full 24 hours later, I was happy find that my skin did not get any reaction. It stayed clear.

~

I wanted to try using Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay before putting on makeup. To see how it affected the makeup application process and if affects the staying power of the makeup.

I tried this on myself.

It was the day of the Christmas Party of Mars, the TV magazine show I work for. To get the story, read my blog about it and it’s accompanying makeup video tutorial by clicking here.

I have been working all day and I needed to put my makeup on once my body temperature has regulated and my heart has paced normally. It’s always best to apply makeup when one is relaxed. Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Trans-foam Clay in White helped me relax and it calmed my skin. The active ingredient in this clay the Roman Chamomile, an herb that is known for it’s calming agent / stress reducer.

In my experience, my makeup lasted longer. The clay made my skin toned and tight. I also noticed that my skin did not get as oily as it usually did making my makeup last the entire night without extensive retouching. Since then, I use this clay when I have a shoot with a beauty makeup requirement.

I highly recommend using a clay mask before putting on your makeup. It does make a difference.

While writing this entry, I managed to find the official Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Trans-foam Clay video.

This video will explain further the methodology, the ingredients, the benefits, and the science behind this product.

I have to say, what a lovely video. The photography, production design, cinematic flow and the music made me feel… beautiful.

At this time, I do not know if this is available in the Philippines. So if you are abroad do try to check this out.

This product individually sells at $15 and the Trio sells at $35 ($45 value) on www.Sephora.com.

Sephora Collection Therapy Mask

Sephora Collection Therapy Mask
Ginseng Therapy Mask

As I posted on my recent blog entry (Sephora Collection Eye Mask), I purchased the Sephora Collection Therapy Mask to avail of  free delivery by reaching the Php 1300 minimum spending requirement.

I bought the Sephora Collection Ginseng Therapy Mask – 5 Piece and the Sephora Collection Lotus Therapy Mask – 5 Piece out of curiosity. They retail for Php 536 ($11.40).

The 5 piece facial masks comes in a colored circular plastic packaging which I plan to re-use in the future. I think it would be great for storing puffs and sponges. They actually remind me of those colorful CD cases from the 90’s.

These are made in China. Sephora Collection Ginseng Therapy Mask – 5 Piece  are made with ingredients imported from Taiwan and the Sephora Collection Lotus Therapy Mask – 5 Piece are made with ingredients imported from France.

I wanted to buy more, but most of what I wanted to purchase were out of stock.

Sephora Collection Lotus Theraphy MAsk

Again they come in 10 “flavors” just like the Sephora Collection Eye Mask. Namely:

*is a tall grain bearing topical plant. Read the Wikipedia entry here to know more.

Choose any of these products that would suit your skin type and needs.

These facial masks comes in singles too and retails for Php 134 ($2.85). Check out this Sephora Collection Pomegranate Therapy Mask.

Tor on the couchI decided to try the Sephora Collection Lotus Therapy Mask because of it’s promised benefits : hydrating and soothing. Let me say that before I used this, I left it inside my fridge to cool overnight.

Tearing the packaging is relatively easy. The sheet has a faint delicate scent that I love. The kind of scent I only smell on babies.

Once I removed the facial mask from the packaging, it was dripping wet. It is heavily soaked with product. When I unfolded the sheet, I thought it was too big. But as soon as I started layering it on my face, I have come to realize that it fits my face. I poured what was left of the product unto my palm and started adding it to the face mask with a tapping motion using my fingers.

There was no itching upon initial contact. The coolness of the facial mask helped me relax. I decided to lay down on the couch and dozed off.

25 minutes later, I removed the sheet and realized it was still soaked with product. After folding the sheet, I rubbed it all over ears, jaw area, my neck, all the way down to my chest, on my elbows, on my knees and on other dry spots of my body.

Never waste products. Always try to use everything for all it’s worth.

My skin felt plump. The wrinkles around my eye area are less visible because of the hydrating properties of the mask. My skin looked relaxed and radiant. There was no sign of redness. I had no allergic reaction to it.

This is a keeper.

Sephora Collection Eye Masks

This was actually an “impulse” purchase. I have just finished uploading my blog about Skinlite Facial Masks when I started perusing through WWW.SEPHORA.PH. Skin care products were on my mind. I was going through the Sephora Collection page when I saw color. I was seeing pinks, greens, purples, yellows, blues, lavenders.

You see, I get attracted to colors. You should see my t-shirts from Uniqlo.

I had to click on them.

It was the Sephora Collection Eye Mask – Mono collection.

Left to right: Ginseng, Rose, Orchid, and Marine Algae.
Left to right: Ginseng, Rose, Orchid, and Marine Algae.

This came at an opportune time because I ran out of eye masks recently. I have recently discovered that the eye masks of the brand that I have been using for the past two years has been discontinued.  There’s this  Korean brand I have been looking into but, it’s too expensive a purchase. I needed a product that was effective, reliable, easily available and cost efficient.

The Sephora Collection Eye Mask – Mono, as the are called, are sold by piece. They retail for Php 101 ($2.15). Here are the ten different “flavors” of Sephora Collection Eye Mask – Mono and their suggested selling points:

*is a tall grain bearing topical plant. Read the Wikipedia entry here to know more.

Since these are singles, I wanted to buy them all to try them out. But Job’s Tears, Pearl, Pomegranate, Avocado, Green Tea and Lotus were sold out.

After adding the available products to my cart, I continued perusing through the site and stumbled upon their Sephora Collection Eye Mask – 5 piece. This retails for Php 402 ($8.55). It’s quite a bargain. Five pieces for the price of four.

Sephora Collection Eye Mask - 5 Piece

Green Tea Eye Mask

The Sephora Collection Green Tea Eye Mask – 5 piece was available and I decided to purchase it. Just like the Sephora Collection Eye Mask – Mono , the Sephora Collection Eye Mask – 5 piece comes in 10 “flavors”. Again, I wanted to buy them all, but money does not grow on trees. I decided to review my cart and purchase only the products that I know I will need based on the working conditions I usually experience and on the different skin types of my private clients (most of them).

The reason why I decided to purchase the Sephora Collection Green Tea Eye Mask – 5 piece is because green tea is a known anti-oxidant with  anti-inflammatory properties. This will help calm down the nerves around the eyes and lessen the appearance of puffy under eyes. I chose Orchid, for that woman of a certain age, Marine Algae for that very dry skinned model, Rose for those who have dark under eye issues, and Ginseng for those with tired under eyes.

The Sephora Collection Eye Mask – 5 piece comes in a plastic case which I like. I’m a stickler for recycling things and I’m already thinking of many useful ways to reuse it.

~

Mesh
The mesh that hold the pads.

I decided to test out the Sephora Collection Rose Eye Mask. This past week, I have been swamped with work while fighting of a minor infection. Aside from waking up early to get to work, I have been waking up at odd hours to take my meds. I needed some “brightening”.

Tearing the packaging is relatively easy. Once opened a faint scent of rose is apparent. The two eye pads were “very wet” when I took them out. There is a thin protective film holds the eye pad; retaining it’s shape. I’m not sure if it’s made of mesh or plastic.

Under Eye Pads
The half-moon masks as described on the packaging.

I had a little bit of trouble trying to figure out how to place the pads under my eyes. After a few twists and turns, the half-moon masks fell rightfully into place. The sheet starts off close to the inner corner of the eyes and goes all the way to the temples. Creating some sort of lift. Before throwing the packaging, I peeked inside the packaging and saw that there was a generous amount of the gel substance left. I scooped it out with my fingers and patted them unto the pads.

Upon contact, I did not feel any itching. My eyes did not feel irritated. It felt quite cool and minty. Unlike some eye pads out there that “sting” your eyes.   I decided to space out for a few minutes. I was becoming quite relaxed.

20 minutes later I removed the pads, there were no signs of redness or irritation. My under eyes felt firm and looked less puffy. The eye pads has also left it intensely moisturized, making me look less tired; brighter. I believe this eye mask has light reflecting properties which you’ll notice once the gel like substance dries. I noticed a certain “luminosity” on my under eye area.

I went to bed.

The effects are still apparent after a good night’s sleep. After waking up, I can still feel a tautness on my under eye area and the radiance is still there. The most important thing is that there was no redness, no itching; no signs of an allergic reaction.

~

These eye masks are a great partner in your skin care routine, especially before you put your makeup on. It will help you relax. Make sure to keep then in your fridge. Before using them for the first time, make sure it has been “refrigerated” over night. The cold will help de-puff any swelling.

If you have the budget, this is great to do two – three times a week. If not, “as needed” will be fine. But do take note that this will not take the place of an under eye cream/treatment.

~

Unfortunately, I cannot give you the complete ingredients list because it’s in Chinese.

As stated in the packaging, these eye masks are made in China using imported ingredients from Taiwan (Ginseng, Rose), France(Orchid), Germany(Marine Algae) and Spain(Green Tea).

However, the scientific names of some ingredients are shown in English.

After checking out the Sephora US site I’ve noticed that the package design of the eye masks are quite different. Because of this and the instructions + ingredients list are written in Chinese on the packaging, I have come to the conclusion that these “Made in China” Spehora Collection Eye Masks are sold on the Asian Sephora websites only.

Skinlite Facial Masks

Facial masks are quite unappreciated in the Philippines. I believe that this is going to change because I see a lot of them now inside beauty stores. A clear indication that this skin care regimen is “picking up”.

Facial masks are a good addition to your regular skin care routine. You can do it once a week or three times a week; depending on your budget, life style and patience.

I posted this photo on my Instagram page a few weeks ago. It was a very hectic week for me and I needed to relax. I’ve managed to convince my partner to relax with me.

I picked up these facial masks at The Landmark a week prior. They were only Php 59.75 each! I picked up two of the Skinlite  Cucumber Essence Mask and two of the Skinlite Moisturizing Herb Mask.

I picked up the cucumber mask because cucumber, an anti-oxidant,  is known for its hydrating and relaxing properties. I picked up the herb mask because lavender was the photo used in its packaging. I found out when I got home that there wasn’t any lavender on the ingredients list, but an assortment of herbs namely :Portulaca Oleracea, Paenonia Albiflora, Cornus Officinalis Fruit, Polygonum Multiflorum and Angelica Acutiloba.  Most of these herbs contain Ursolic and Oleanolic Acid that has anti-inflammatory capabilities that nourishes + hydrates the skin (this would be good for those who have Dry Skin).

The first thing that I noticed once I opened these facial masks was their fragrance. They smelled so good. The cucumber mask had a fresh and minty aroma while the herb mask reminded me of the perfume “Light Blue” for women from Dolce and Gabbana . It added pleasantness to the experience.

The mask felt cool on our skins, it even made us doze off for a few minutes. After a little  twenty minutes, we took off the masks and noticed that our skin was very well moisturized… plump. While my partner went straight to bed, I spent a few minutes trying to observe for any after effects. So far, none.

The next day when I woke up, I felt quite well rested. Yes, it can have that effect. I then went straight to the mirror to check for any unwanted effects after a number of hours. There were no red spots, no itching, no signs of chemical burns or any allergic reactions. Being quite happy with the results, I decided to make it a part of my kit.

Skinlite Facial Masks are made in South Korea. As we all now know, South Korea is well-known for their skin care products. You can’t go wrong with this.

~

I always store the masks inside my refrigerator. Before using one, I make sure that the facial mask has been inside the fridge over night. That way, when it is applied, the coldness of the mask helps in reducing puffiness of the face, closes the pores, and encourages blood circulation; bringing oxygen to the face.

This is good way to start the weekend after a long hectic week at work. A great way to help your skin recover from a wonderful night out with friends. This is also good to use during long haul flights! Keep a few pieces on your hand carry, and pop it on an hour or two before landing.

This is a GREAT way to start your makeup routine. Put this on for 10 to 15 minutes. Keeping still while doing this so that your body temperature goes down; not making you sweat. This slows down your heart rate placing you in a much more relaxed state once you start applying your makeup.

~

Now, what might work for me might not necessarily work for you. Make sure to read the proper instructions before using this product.

Always take time to read the ingredients lists before purchasing. Be an intelligent consumer. Only buy products that suit your skin type, skin care routine and budget.

Garnier Light Complete Multi-action Brightening Eye Roll On

12962568_10154167516336661_1625649688_o
Garnier Light Complete Multi-action Brightening Eye Roll-On

I was reacquainted with this product recently when I saw one of the camera crew (from the magazine tv show MARS) whip this out from his bag and started applying it to his under eyes. I observed him with astonishment. Yes, he was male. Yes, men are equally as vain as women. And yes, the desire to have healthier and lighter looking under eyes is universal.

The next day was grocery day. I made my usual rounds at Shopwise Sucat; got all that I need for the house and perused the cosmetics/personal care area. I picked up Garnier Light Complete Multi-action Brightening Roll-on and headed for the cashier. Time to put it to the test; on my self.

~

I do like the ergonomic design of the roller pen. It fits perfectly on the hand, making it easy to handle.

12970251_10154167530326661_17044953_o
The roller ball tip of the product.

Upon contact, the gel like formula feels cool on the skin. The roller ball tip heightens the feeling + it’s like giving my under eyes a massage. Which is great by the way. It helps drain excess fluids from the area, de-puffing it.

The gel like formula dried in less than a couple minutes. I felt a slight tightening in my under eye area.

I do not have dark under eye circles, so I can’t really say anything in that department BUT I did notice a sheen on my under eyes that reflects the light. I quickly got the box and went to the ingredients list. It’s the Mica that’s doing this. I ended up using this to highlight the area under my brows and on the high points of my cheeks.

After a few days of using this, I didn’t feel any adverse effect like itching nor did I develop any skin disorders such as milia. This looks promising.

Decided to place this on my kit and bring it on a test run.

~

Suzi was on leave from the show (MARS) and I had a number of guest c0-hosts sitting on my chair for the past two weeks. These were women of different skin types and skin issues. They were relaxed enough to let me try this on them.

In general, the initial reaction is always how “cool” it felt on the under eye area. It did help them relax a bit on my chair. The slight light reflecting qualities and the “tightening” feeling was noticed from the get-go. The makeup I placed on the under eye area held up and didn’t lead to more than the usual “breakdown”.

They also liked the size of the roller pen. It fits easily in any vanity kit or a small pocket in your purse. Very convenient.

So far so good.

VMV Hypoallergenics Makeup Removers

12941168_10154165026496661_1157185970_o
Beauty Advice: Always remove your makeup.

Makeup removers are essential in your daily makeup routine. You must ALWAYS remove your makeup before you get to bed. Let your skin breathe while you sleep.

~

Oil has been used for the longest time as cleansers, even as long as before soap was discovered. It remains the only effective way of removing dirt with out stripping the skin of it’s moisture. This happens naturally too. I’m sure people who have naturally oily skin have noticed that their makeup doesn’t hold up as long as other people. Oil breaks down many components that hold your makeup. Even those with waterproof formulas. That’s how effective oils are.

I have two kinds of makeup removers in my kit. I have one that is oil free and one that is oil based. This way, I can adjust to a client or to a model’s preference. These two formulas are from VMV Hypoallergenics.

12962544_10154165055801661_1756740809_o
Left: Gentle & Softening Makeup Removing Oil                                                                                          Right: Oil-Free Quick and Complete Makeup Remover

These are so handy in my kit because these makeup removers comes in “no rinse” formulas. I share this backstage when models requests for makeup removers after a show. They just rub it on to their faces, wipe it off with some tissue and go on their way.

12970222_10154165064831661_1371997034_oMy favorite is VMV Hypoallergenics Gentle & Softening Makeup Removing Oil. Mainly because it’s key ingredient is virgin coconut oil. If you still don’t know it by now, virgin coconut oil has antibacterial and anti aging properties that are beneficial for your skin.

This is a very gentle makeup remover but very effective. As you can see on the photo on the left,  it can remove even the thickest of makeup formulas. I used layers of cream makeup when I did a “Cosmic Flight Attendant” look one Monday afternoon after watching the film “The Fifth Element“. I just soaked a cotton ball with it and wiped it off the makeup instantly. Leaving a moist appearance which I love. For the purpose of comparison, I used this on the left side of my face.

This product leaves your skin clean and moisturized with a hint of coconut. This formula is best to use for those who have dry skin.As with all oil based makeup removers, avoid using this around the wet areas of your eyes cause it can sting.

For those who prefer to use an oil-free formula use VMV Hypoallergenics Oil-Free Quick & Complete Makeup Remover. This is a water based makeup remover with an active ingredient called Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, a surfactant (cleansing agent) derived from coconut oil. This product is a gentle makeup remover with effective cleansing properties as well.

12948356_10154165064996661_1535769569_o As you can see on the photo on the left, I used this product to removed the layers of cream based makeup on the right side of my face. Again, I just soaked a cotton ball with it and wiped it away.

If you’ll take a closer look, it did not leave a “moist” appearance. Nonetheless, It still left my skin fresh, clean and moisturized.

This formulation is best to be used if you have oily skin. Avoid using this around the wet areas of your eyes as well cause it can sting. Swipe this product gently on your eyelids, lashes and lashlines.

If you have sensitive skin and prone to allergic reactions, this product is good for you. If you are the type of person who finds washing your face at night to be quite a chore and prefer to cleanse your skin with out washing involved then these products are for you. These products can also be an alternative way of cleansing you skin during the cold especially in the middle of the winter season. Too much washing of the face can lead to excessive dryness. This can be avoided by using  VMV Hypoallergenics Gentle & Softening Makeup Removing Oil to keep your skin moisturized through cold winter nights.

There are many oil cleansers in the market to suit your life style, your needs and your budget. I found mine in VMV Hypoallergenics.

Skin Protection

1797399_10152241098376661_26099919_n

Summer is around the corner. While it seems (as of this writing) that the weather is being a capricous flirt, the sun has been out the past few days reassuring us that the promise of summer is to come.

One should be prepared to face the sun with your best ally, sun screen.

I have heard many complaints from people who doesn’t want to use sun screen for the primary reason that it makes their skin “oily”. Second, they don’t like the “white cast” it leaves on the skin. Third, they couldn’t care less for sun screen.

Here’s the thing, aside from tiny beads of sweat coming out of your pores, if your sun screen of choice is making you appear “oily” , you are supposed to be assured that your skin is being protected. There are some formulas that are silicone or chemical based that creates a “barrier” on the skin, protecting it from the sun by absorbing and dissipating its harmful light.

If you have a “white cast” on your face or body, that is actually an active ingredient that helps protect your skin from the sun. This means that your sun screen of choice has mineral components. These mineral components (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) reflect the sun light off so that UV rays won’t penetrate deep into your skin. If you do not want to have a “white cast” on your face, change to a different formulation.

And if you don’t care less for sunscreen, well that’s your choice. An unintelligent one at that.

One other question is, what is SPF?

Based on my own research and understanding, SPF or Sun Protection Factor is an indication on how much time the sun screen protects you from burning. UVB rays is actually what causes our skin to burn. The SPF indicated on your sun screen protects you from UVB rays.

To let you understand SPF more, let me put it in simple mathematical terms.

I have observed that my skin burns in 10 mintues and the SPF on my sun screen is 70. When I apply my sun screen, it multiplies the time it takes before I get burned. So my sun screen gives me 700 minutes of extra protection before I burn. Now, I might be wrong with my calculation and I would appreciate someone telling me if I am off with this.

Choosing the right sun screen should be based on your life style and sun or light exposure. If you only go out for errands, then a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 would do. If you do sports, choose a sun screen with a higher SPF rating. And if you’re like me, a makeup artist who constantly work under the bright lights of the studio or on location, my sun screen of choice has an SPF of 70.

1623723_10152241153131661_173997997_nI use VMV Hypoallergenics ARMADA Sport SPF 70 . It is a full – spectrum sun screen with an SPF rating of 70 and a PFA rating of 10.

PFA means Protection Factor in UVA. VMV Hypoallergenics ARMADA Sport SPF 70 affords me ten times as much protection from UVA light than if I go with out this sun screen.

As we all know, UVA is more harmful than UVB because it actually penetrates deeper into the skin. UVA light is what makes our skin darker and long time exposure can lead to wrinkles, leathery skin and in some cases cancer.

ARMADA Sport is a silicone based sun screen, so this will not give you that “white cast” look.

The main reason why I love this product is because I do not get the burning sensation after frolicking on the beach under the sun. I spread a generous amount on my face (paying attention to the forehead), on my head (yes! so my scalp won’t burn), on my ears, my nape and on my shoulders. These are the parts of the body that get “hit” by the light of the sun in earnest, so it’s best to protect them.

I do not break out from this product. It is validated hypoallergenic, non-drying amd non-comeogenic.

For the rest of my body, I choose to use a cheaper brand of sun screen like Nivea. Frankly, Armada Sport is a bit expensive, that’s why I only use it in specific areas. This is the main reason why, the tan on my face is lighter than the tan I have all over my body.

Now, when buying sun screen (or any other product) ALWAYS read the literature or instructions written on the box or on the product itself. This will educate you on the right application process and on other needed instructions. If it says to apply sun screen 30 minutes before sun exposure, do it. Let this product help you help yourself by following instructions.

I do not believe some sun screens that say they are water proof because it will be washed off eventually. It is a very misleading piece of information and but a marketing ploy. Choose a sun screen that is water resistant, aside from the fact that is a much more viable fact, this product had to undergo testing required by the FDA. Be wary as well of sun screens that profess having an SPF of 100 because it sounds unrealistic and it cannot be claimed because of the logarithmic/mathematical nature of how these sun screens are tested.

If it is possible, avoid sun exposure  between 10 AM and 4 PM. The sun’s intensity peaks from 12 noon to 4 PM. If you cannot avoid the sun, just protect yourself with umbrellas, hats, caps and sun glasses. Speaking of sunglasses, I strongly believe that one should invest in dark glasses to protect ones eyes and under eyes from the sun. Remember that your under eyes has the thinnest layer of skin on your face. Extreme sun exposure can lead to crows feet and other signs of aging.

Now, if you have any further questions about sun screen, ask your dermatologist or a practicing professional in the field of skin care. They can give you more technical information that you might need. All that I have written here is based on my own research and understanding.

I will end this blog with a video made by Baz Luhrmann in 1999, its lyrics was originally written by Mary Schmich in an essay back in 1997.. it’s not only about sun screen but its about life in general.

Enjoy!

Good Skin

I am starting a blog about my favorite things to use as a makeup artist. Anything from cosmetics to skin care and there would be an occasional hair product thrown into the mix.

For my first entry, I am talking about skin care. Yes, skin care. As of this writing, I have been working as a makeup artist for eight wonderful years and within that time span, I have noticed that majority of people I have worked with do not have the proper skin care regimen. You have no idea how many times I have had to hide my annoyance because some people expect my brush to be the magic wand that can make every single blemish, freckle, pock mark and that none existent bump in the middle of the forehead disappear with the flick of my wrist. Applying a thick wad of foundation is never the solution of making the skin look good.

Less is more.

Remember makeup sits better and lasts longer on well maintained skin. In the long run, you won’t even have to use any foundation at all.

I will be sharing my skin care regimen. I know this will not work for everyone, but I hope that this will jump-start someone’s journey to good skin.

Tor Torre, 31 years of age going on 32.

No filter, no edit, just used my IPhone 4s

I have been told by a few people that I have good skin. I don’t mean to carry my own throne, but I know this to be true.

This wasn’t always the case.

Going through High School, I was marked by pimples and uneven skin tone. I was teased about it a few times and that fueled my quest to have good skin. In turn, it lead me hopping from one brand to another, trying out different formulas, breaking out even more and getting frustrated.

Luckily, one evening I was watching The Oprah Winfrey Show and they were talking about skin care.  That night I learned that the most important aspect of skin care is using a moisturizer with Collagen in it. As we age, Collagen production in our body weakens. Having Collagen in your moisturizer helps strengthens the skin and aids it in its renewal process.

The next day, I made my way to the department store and went through different skin care products. I decided to stick to one brand. Different brands have different formulas and I was scared that intermixing might alter the chemical balance of my skin.

For a sophomore in High School, I chose the cheapest skin care brand available.

To this day I am still using it.

St. Ives Apricot Scrub

St. Ives was the brand I decided to stick with on that fateful day some 15 odd years ago.

Their Apricot Scrub is a staple on my shelf. For years it has scrubbed away dead skin cells, grime from long shooting days, bike rides through dusty streets or a few layers of makeup. I like how invigorated my skin feels after using this.

One of the main reasons why I appreciate this product is because it helps me NOT get ingrown hair (which can be painful). My facial hair is quite course and they tend to curl back inward. This scrub gets rid of the thin layer of dead skin cells that covers the follicle.

I have tried other facials scrubs before but I break out from them. The formulation might be too strong or the beads might be too coarse.

I use this scrub 3 to 4 times a week or as needed.

If you are constantly breaking out or experiencing sensitive skin, that is an indication that you are exfoliating too much. It’s either you are scrubbing your face rigorously or using an exfoliating solution which is too strong for your skin. It might be an indication that you might be allergic to a certain ingredient in the product. So before purchasing, always read the ingredients!

St. Ives Collagen Elastin Moisturizer

Another St. Ives staple on my shelf is their Collagen Elastin Moisturizer.

I bought this because of my de facto Godmother, Oprah, said so..

The reason why I love using moisturizer is because it hydrates my skin.

Let me tell you, what makes fine lines appear on your face is dry skin.

I made this observation the first time I went to Europe. I started noticing some lines that I haven’t seen before. That’s when I realized that the air is drier in some countries. Dry air sucks the moisture right our of your skin making it dry, patchy and prone to cracking. I finished a tub of moisturizer in a month.

That’s why I always tell people to moisturize. It nourishes the skin and keeps it healthy.

The discontinued St. Ives Renewal Cream

Before I turned thirty, I decided to add an anti aging regimen to my skin care.

Let me say that during my late teens and through my twenties,  I was also using St. Ives Renewal Cream. I bought this by accident because I thought it was a moisturizer. It turned out to be a cream made of AHA and BHA. I have been using that up until I couldn’t find them on the shelves in 2006.

In knowing what I know now, I have been using an anti aging cream unknowingly at that time.

In 2010 when I was 28 years old,  I decided to add a few anti-aging products to my routine. I am a beach lover and I enjoy soaking up the sun. This lead to photoaging. Luckily enough, I was asked to collaborate with a skin care and cosmetics line for their in-store display and advertising materials and was introduced to their anti-aging line.

I decided to try it.

VMV Hypoallergenics Re-everything Eye Serum

VMV Hypoallergenics has an anti-aging line called “Re-Everything”.

Since then, I have been using their Re-everything Eye Serum.

What I feel is a tightening of my under eyes which makes it appear less puffy.

As stated behind the bottle, this product promises to give “long-term cellular renewal, anti-aging and antioxidant therapy.” Which I like to hear because it is not boastful.

I have used other Eye Serums from other brands and I always get Millia. Millia are keratin filled bumps that appear around my eyes (or anywhere else). They weren’t painful but it takes a while for them to disappear. I had to extract them a few times.

Ever since I have used VMV’s Re-everything Eye Serum , I haven’t had that experience at all.

564131_10152211063081661_409537630_n
VMV Hypoallergenics Re-Everything Cream          Primary Treatment.

At the same time, I was also introduced to VMV Hypoallergenics Re-Everything Cream. I am currently using the Anti-aging Primary Treatment (yes, there is an advance treatment only to be used once you have finished this bottle).

What I like about this product is the “glow” that it gives me when I use this. I have also noticed that my skin looks and feels healthier.

The most important thing for me is that, my skin hasn’t become sensitive at all. Most anti aging creams I have tried before made me break out or made a few spots on my face “tingle”! It was such a relief for me when I started using this because I didn’t have any of those issues at all.

It is gentle yet powerful.

The other great thing about VMV Hypoallergenics is that it is a Global Filipino brand. It is largely available all over the Philippines and in some parts of the world (click here). Their products are known to be allergen free. So you know it is safe.

GNC Vitamin E, A & D and GNC Vitamin C Moisturizing Cream

While walking around the mall and wandering into GNC, I discovered they had moisturizers. I decided to take home their Vitamin C and Vitamin E A and D moisturizing creams because they were on sale and because they were moisturizers with anti oxidants.

As suggested by the sales representative, I could mix both products if I so desired.

Once I got home, I checked out the ingredients first and see what was the major difference. Both moisturizers have the same components except for the vitamins in each bottle. I decided to mix both and used then immediately. It’s been four months since I started using it and I have not experience any adverse reaction to the mixing, and my skin not only appears radiant but feels healthy too.

I alternate between St. Ives Collagen Elastin Moisturizer  (I use this at night) and GNC’s Vitamin C / Vitamin E A and D moisturizing creams (I use during the day).

Let me also state that I work out at least 3 times a week. I engage in a few sporting activities every so often. I try to eat healthy. I watch what I eat, not my weight. I do not smoke. I only drink alcohol once in a very blue moon. AND I don’t have facials because I do not believe in them.

That my friends is my skin care regimen. I was lucky enough to find products that work for me. I have been using almost the same products. The few changes I made throughout the years was because some products got phased out and I’ve added a few because of the need to adjust to my aging process.

I know some of you have a difficult time finding a product and a formula that works. The products that you choose doesn’t have to be the most expensive in the market. Always do your own research. It pays to be knowledgeable of what you want for yourself. If you don’t know what your issues are, ask for help. If you are doubtful of the person you are asking, look for someone who is knowledgeable of the product that you are looking for.

Having great skin is finding a skin care regimen and sticking to it. One must not be lazy about it.
