Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation On-The-Go

First look at Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation On-The-Go.

The packaging is quite handy. It is made of plastic, which is lighter than that of traditional glass bottled foundations out in the market. It is quite easy to store with out the risk of spillage or bottle caps turning loose. This is perfect for women who are always “on-the-go”.

Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation On-The-Go compact had a radius of 2.6 inches and a depth of an inch. The applicator sponge that comes along with the compact is more rubbery in nature. It feels smooth to the touch and spreads the liquid foundation on the skin quite well.

The cushion is soaked with liquid foundation and housed at the bottom of the compact. It is separated from the rest of the compact (and the world) with a “snap-on” lid. This “snap-on” lid acts as an anti spillage mechanism, it keeps the foundation from drying out and serves as the “well” that stores the applicator sponge. The cushion appears more porous and holds .51 oz/14.6 grams of product.

As you’d noticed on the video, this liquid foundation is quite pigmented. As stated on their packaging, it offers medium coverage. You can start off with a sheer application and “build up” the coverage as needed.

The main ingredient of this is water. Which means it’s hydrating. Anyone can use this but, it’s best suited for people with normal to oily skin.

Maybelline Dream Cushion
True Beige 40

I decided to try this out on myself at work; I work closely with people who work for TV and I’m sure they’d notice.

With a taping motion, I applied True Beige 40 on the centre of my face and under the eyes, spreading upwards and out wards. This was the color that matches my skin tone. I applied Medium Beige 45 to the rest of my face to add depth. I lightly contoured my temples, hollows of my cheeks, on the side of my nose and on my eyelids with Caramel 55.

All three colors were easy to apply and blend using the applicator sponge. Again, I used a tapping motion when applying this product. I did not set this with powder. If I did so, it will look very obvious that I was wearing makeup and I wanted to see how long it was going to last by “itself”. Plus, I love looking dewy. ALWAYS.

Let me say, I do not wear makeup unless needed (in DRAG) and I’m proud of my skin. I wanted to be sure that this product does not make me look like I’m wearing makeup.

Off the bat, people started noticing.

“You’re looking fresh today!”

“Your skin looks lovely!”

“Your skin is looking glow-y today!”

“Why is your skin dewy?”

“You’re wearing makeup today aren’t you? It matches your skin perfectly!”

I had a generally good response. I was impressed.

I have oily skin, and I have to say that the foundation stayed all day. Despite the occasional blast of heat from the hair dryer, going in and out the studio, eating, and even after brushing my teeth; it stayed. Then again, I am very disciplined when it comes to my face. Aside from having a skin care routine (click here to read my blog about that), I rarely touch my face. When I do, I’m mindful about it. That in itself helps makeup stay on longer.

As soon as I got home, I jumped into the shower and washed my face. I skipped the toning and the moisturizing to see if any residue of the foundation would lead to a breakout the next day. I am happy to announce, that my skin stayed clear.

Let’s talk about cleanliness.

Before wearing makeup always clean your skin first. Cleanse, tone and moisturize. This will create a clean canvass for your makeup and there would be less dirt, oil or grime the applicator sponge will pick up.

The applicator sponge of the Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation On-The-Go, as I described earlier, feels more rubbery. It’s also feels dense yet fine and very soft to the touch. I’m not too sure if the sponge is made with Rubycell technology because it is not stated in the packaging. Rubycell technology creates microporous materials that has anti-microbial  and anti-bacterial properties. The only sponges I have seen that were made with Rubycell technology are colored blue. Once this launches we’ll have more information and I will update this entry.

I must reiterate, always clean your applicator sponge every so often. Like every two – three days with warm water and an anti-bacterial soap. It’s very easy to do. Do it at night before going to bed. Leave this to dry overnight on your bathroom counter. It should be dry once you wake up.

I have tried washing the applicator sponge after using. No matter how much soap I use, even if the water from the applicator sponge runs clear, the foundation stain stays. Never the less, it’s always best to have clean tools. Your skin will thank you for it.

Over all this product does the job. It feels light and it makes the skin look refined. Since this offers medium coverage, additional concealing methods should be applied to cover any spots and blemishes.

As of press time (char!), the product featured in this blog entry, The Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation On-The-Go, is not yet available on the market. If my readings are right, it is set to launch in 2017.

I got this from a friend of a friend of a friend during my recent trip to New York, straight from the backstage of New York Fashion Week . I ended up with fifteen pounds of makeup products that left me scurrying for new luggage.

The first time I saw cushion compacts was when Korean cosmetics companies launched them in 2014. Most of the products launched were BB and CC creams. I have had no experience with these types of products until recently. The reason they did not appeal to me is because these products are marketed for personal use.

I still believe, after this review, it is best for personal use.

I would like to hope that the Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation On-The-Go will have a color range that would suit most skin tones. I have 8 shades with me; colors that would suite fair , medium and dark skin tones. I’m sure when this product launches it will have more shades. After all their Fit Me Matte and Poreless Foundation has 24 shades, their Fit Me Dewy and Smooth Foundation has 16 shades, their SuperStay Better Skin Foundation has 16 shades, while their Dream Matte Mouse has 12 shades.

Take note that Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation On-The-Go does not have any SPF. This would be great for photographs because there will be no flash back. But if you’ll be out and about on that specific day, dab on some sun screen prior to applying this foundation.

If you are a Maybelline fan, you have something to look forward to this coming new year.

VMV Hypoallergenics Skintangible “faint”ation Skin Refining Non-Makeup SPF 30

One of my favorite products in my kit in this BB cream from VMV Hypoallergenics called Skintangible “Faint”ation Skin Refining Non-Makeup SPF 30. It’s quite a mouth full to say out loud, let’s call it Skintangible.

I use this product mostly on men. Especially on those who get scared at the sight of makeup. Kidding aside, this is a great product to use for those of you who do not want to wear foundation. This product is very light weight that offers a hint of color with skin care benefits + sun protection.

When the product is pumped out,  it looks like a thick dark yellow cream against your skin. It actually thins out once you start spreading it on your face. Once blended, it gives your skin a “fresh” and “even” looking appearance with out altering its tone.

To me, Skintangible has a hint of an olive undertone to it. This yellow and green combination acts as a color corrector / primer that minimizes and neutralizes red spots/areas around the face.

Skintangible has only one shade, and according to the product description on website of VMV Hypoallergenics, this works with all skin tones.

I personally believe that this will work best on light to medium skin tones with warm,  golden and olive undertones.

This is a very light weight and sheer product. Your skin can actually breathe. This is water based, so this is great for oily skin. It keeps the skin moisturized with out the oily feel. This actually dries into a demi-matte finish (semi matte). Even if you have dry skin, this product will keep your skin moisturized.

Skintangible has Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract. This acts as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. That helps soothes the skin and minimizes redness. Monolaurin is also present in this product. This acts as an anti-bacterial and anti-acne agent that keeps your skin healthy and blemish free. People with rosacea can benefit from this product.

Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are key ingredients in the BB cream. These minerals offers sun protection, minimizing the effects of photo damage. These are the ingredients that gives your skin a dewy, soft focused look.

Let me say that the products I am using has worked for me and it might not necessarily work for you. Always be discerning when purchasing cosmetics or skin care products. Bobbi Brown BBU Palette

My new #notebook

A post shared by Tor Torre (@tortorre) on

Starting out in makeup artistry is an expensive undertaking. Here’s a piece of advice: build your makeup kit slowly. Only invest in products that are useful and universal. This is not the time to splurge on limited editions or whimsical collections. Make sure that you have the basics.

One of the basics that you need is foundation. In knowing what I know now, let me say that it is best to invest in foundation palettes. Foundation palettes have an array of colors that can match any shade of skin at any given time. It is your base, highlighter and contour product in one. Over time, as you continue on your makeup journey, you will notice which colors you frequently use. Those are the colors that you should buy in full size.  On a lighter note, palettes in your kit can make your load lighter. It’s no joke bringing around 20 kilos of makeup.

One foundation palette I have in my kit is the Bobbi Brown University Palette; more popularly called The BBU palette. It has a whopping 20 shades of foundation from her Skin Foundation Stick collection. Aside from that, it also has 13 shades of Corrector and 14 shades of Creamy Concealer. It is practically all you need to create a flawless face.

Bobbi’s foundation on this palette provide, at most, medium coverage. It is very creamy, easy to blend and sheer out. If the skin you are working on is heavily blemished, you will need to work a bit more on blemish by layering foundation and concealer around the area. Do take note that this is a cream foundation, it will always give a dewy finish and will work best on dry and combination skin types.

As a precaution, since the “wells” of this product are closely packed together, it is best to use a spatula to pick up the product that you need. Also always make sure to spritz 99% alcohol all over the palette to sanitize it after every use.

Face Shade Guide

The BBU palette comes in a packaging that is easy to hold and store, it practically this size of a small notebook. It’s made of a black sturdy plastic material with a total dimension of 7.7in x 6.4in x .5in when fully open.

The BBU palette comes with a face shade guide as well. It gives you suggestions on what products and colors to use to achieve a cohesive makeup look. Have it laminated at once, so it will last longer.

According to the this palette retails for $250. It seems to be expensive but in truth, it is quite a bargain. If you have friends in the US who are makeup artists who are part of the Bobbi Brown Pro Program (40% off on online purchases) or those who work for Bobbi Brown, they are eligible to get this at a discounted rate. Do take note that the BBU palette sells out fast. So when you see one, buy it.

For those of us here in the Philippines, two of my friends saw this at the Bobbi Brown boutique in Rustan’s a while back. To make sure I contacted their facebook fan page, Bobbi Brown Philippines, to ask for its availability. Indeed it is. This retails for Php 12,500.Again it’s quite pricey, but it’s definitely worth it. Trust me.

I had a project a few weeks back where I was working with three beautiful ladies from South Africa, The BBU palette was my saving grace. I had all the foundation colors needed.

RMK Liquid Foundation

These foundations from RMK are a recent purchase.

I first encountered this product when I was still starting out and I apprenticed for a well-known makeup artist in Manila. I have been wanting to buy them for years, but I was always turned off by the idea that it is not readily available in this country plus the fact that it’s not cheap. At 70 SGD, roughly Php 2380, is quite a lot of money especially when you are starting out.

Last December, I decided that this coming New Year, I was to restock my kit with products that I adore and believe in. So one December afternoon, I called my Singapore based friend Neil and asked for his help. I told him to visit the RMK counter in Isetan Department Store and purchase a number of RMK products for me. So over Facetime, I pointed to the specific products I wanted to purchase while my darling friend Neil pirouetted around the RMK counter.

I asked Neil to purchase three bottles of liquid foundations in the shades of 101, 103 and 105. 101 is the lightest of the color range, 103 is the median shade and 105 is the darkest. These have yellow undertones which is ideal for most Asian skin tones. You won’t get that beige-y “mask” look with these liquid foundations. There are five shades on this color range, but I only bought three because I can always mix the colors to get the “in between” shades. There are also three shades (201, 202 and 203) that are beige color range and the darkest shade (with red undertones) called Coffee Brown. Click here to be brought to their webpage to see the entire shades on both color range.

What I like about this liquid foundation is that it looks like skin. Though it’s quite sheer, it is build-able to a medium coverage. It sits well on the skin and gives off a dewy finish which I LOVE.

Mica Tuaño and I post makeup photo op.
For a test run, I used this on a commercial shoot I did recently. I was very happy with the results and it’s staying power. On the right, you can see how it looked like on my talent Mica (grabbed this photo from her Instagram page).  I’ll post the video here once it’s airing.

These foundations must be used in conjunction with their make-up base(click to see) to achieve ultimate results. I have observed that RMK‘s liquid foundations instantly diminishes redness and some other minimal skin discolorations with out looking cakey. This liquid foundation works well only on skin that has minimal blemishes. If you have lot’s of blemishes, a cream foundation should be used.

This has an SPF of 14, so it’s good to use for those who are cautious about getting sunburned. Be wary of flashback though when using flash photography.

Once Neil finished purchasing the RMK products that I wanted, all he had to do was to meet up with another good friend, Marco, who was heading back to Manila for the Christmas holidays.

Finally after years of being undecided about this liquid foundation, I am happy that these liquid foundations have finally made it to my kit.

FS Two Way Cake Foundation (Powder)

I have been asked time and again what two-way powder foundation I can recommended in place of other expensive brands.

Pictured here is Chino and Rajah

I am happy to say that it is FS Two-Way Cake (it is actually powder), popularly known as Fanny Serrano two-way cake foundation powder. I have noticed that there was a change in the marketing strategy of this cosmetic line recently. It used to be marketed as “Fanny Serrano by F21 Cosmetics “. Now it stands simply as FS Cosmetics. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine and we discussed why this is so. Based on our deduction, we came to the conclusion that the cosmetic company might have used Fanny Serrano’s name for marketing purposes when it was launched into the market back in 2003. Over time, the brand has found its niche in the market and maybe due to the success of the line, the parties involved may not have come into terms when it was time to renew their contracts. That’s why it is now marketed as FS Cosmetics. Then again, this is just speculation on my part.

The packaging of this product has also changed. It still retains its round compact form. The see through cover has been changed into a full cover equipped with a mirror. Sponge is still included. The new packaging of the two-way cake is a step forward in terms of making it commercially viable. On a professional point of view, I liked the see-through cover better because I can see the colors of powder instantly.

The reason why I like recommending and using this product is because it provides build-able coverage. When using powder less is more. With this product, I advice to build the powder on your face slowly. Applying too much powder will give you a “thick” and “cake-y” appearance. It is similar to that of MAC’s Studio FX line. Whilst MAC’s Studio FX line can only be used dry, the FS two-way cake can be used wet or dry. My only qualm about the FS two-way cake is that the powder easily gets unbonded from the each other when I use a brush. It produces so much product excess that I find it wasteful. Unlike the powder foundations from MAC or Laura Mercier, as soon as I sweep my brush on top of the product, an ample amount of powder is picked up by the brush. No excess , no wastage.

One other reason why I like FS two-way cake is because of its color tone. I have noticed that most Filipinas purchase powdered compacts from drug store brands. I don’t have a problem with that except, most Filipinas want to appear “white” even if they are not. In addition to that, most powdered compacts come in one color, white. Remember, when the color of the powder that you use on is not your shade, you do not look white, but you look “ashy”. When one looks gray, one looks unhealthy! Plus, the mismatched color of your face and neck is not appealing at all. FS two-way cake has 7 colors available. It is a limited range but, the important thing is that they are yellow based. If a woman would be patient enough when choosing a shade, she’ll be able to get one that would closely match her skin tone.

The FS two-way cake line has a shade named Rajah. It is the darkest color of the range. I use it as a bronzing/contouring alternative because it has more red pigments iin it. I use this shade for contouring when creating a very natural makeup look. This product line is matte, so I do not worry about excessive shine as the day wears on.

I like things that smell good, and my nose automatically remembers scents that I like. The reason why I can’t forget about this product is because, it smells of vanilla and milk. I’m sure most girls would like to smell good. As a precaution though, only purchase this product if you are not allergic to any kind of fragrance!

This two-way cake aside from having Vitamin E, has an SPF rating of 35 due to the some mineral components* in the ingredients . To know more about sun screen and SPF click here to be brought to my previous blog.

Lastly it is very affordable. A compact retails at Php 399. I know that the price of this product places it in a specific market. But if you are like me who doesn’t really mind marketing ploys, this is a very effective product to use.

My very own FS Two-way cake sits comfortably in my Makeup kit between my MAC Studio FX and Laura Mercier foundation powders.
