Backstage at Lulu Tan-gan for Fashion Watch Quartet (August 2008)

Jessica and Krystal

The girls for the Fashion Watch Quartet : Lulu Tan-gan show have just been dressed and were lining up at the ball room where we were stationed when I took this photo of Jessica and Krystal.

The main focal point of the makeup for this show was the glossed out “Barbie” pink lipstick which complemented the knitwear of Lulu’s design.

Jessica and Krystal were some of the models who frequently sat on my chair throughout the Fashion Watch Series and I appreciate them for that. Jessica and Krystal for me are both beautiful in their own way and I enjoyed working with them.

I was still an apprentice makeup artist at this time and working on two women with very different features at this stage of my career has been a very enriching experience.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

Seen here is Sex Machine, Marina, Never Say Never and Damned

My favorite matte lipstick comes in a pencil form and it is called Velvet Matte Lip Pencil from NARS.

This highly pigmented product is very versatile. I use it most of the time as a lip liner or as a base for lipstick.

It’s texture is very creamy. It slides easily on your lip when you apply it. Being a pencil, it is very easy to control.

Layering is the key when using Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. It initially registers on your lip as the main color of the lipstick and as you layer the product, the color becomes more vibrant or deeper depending on the lipstick that you purchased.

As I stated, I usually use this as a lip liner to define the lips before I apply any other matte or cream based lipstick. It helps me create the dimension that I want on the lip. The formulation of this lip pencil helps in preventing the feathering of your cream lipstick.

As you know, working for TV commercial production means working for long hours.  Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil has an amazing staying power. My go to lip pencil is described as a light pink/mauve-ish color that is neutral yet bright enough to give life to the lips. It is the one named Sex Machine. Yes, you read it right. Nars Cosmetics are known to have very provocative names. VERY provocative.

My favorite “red” Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is called Damned. It is a blue-based red that goes very well with the yellow undertones of the Filipina, especially those who are morena.

My only problem as with all matte lipsticks is the drying effect they cause on the lips. So always apply a lip balm first before using Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil and keep creamy lip stick or clear gloss at hand to rehydrate your lips.

NarsVelvet Matte Lip Pencil comes in 20 shades and are  available at Rustan’s Department Store.* It retails at Php1500 (I have yet to do a new price check). I know it is quite expensive, but it is worth the price.

Sharpener is sold separately.

*I’m not sure if Rustan’s carries all of the 20 shades, but based on past experiences they don’t. Usually they only carry colors that fly off the counter.

A Day of Firsts : Inno Sotto and Bea Valdez (October 2007)

Jade walking down the runway during rehearsals for Inno Sotto’s Alhambra Collection.

When I joined the Patrick Rosas Artistic Team, the first fashion show I worked on was for Inno Sotto’s Alhambra collection on the 29th of October 2007.

I was a nervous wreck the entire day of the show for it is not often that one gets to work for a world class designer. To this day, I thank the heavens for that opportunity.

Seen in this photo is of the model Jade Dy walking down the runway during rehearsals. She was the very first model I ever made up.

It’s only fitting that I begin this section of my site with the very first fashion show I worked on and the very first model I worked with.

FS Two Way Cake Foundation (Powder)

I have been asked time and again what two-way powder foundation I can recommended in place of other expensive brands.

Pictured here is Chino and Rajah

I am happy to say that it is FS Two-Way Cake (it is actually powder), popularly known as Fanny Serrano two-way cake foundation powder. I have noticed that there was a change in the marketing strategy of this cosmetic line recently. It used to be marketed as “Fanny Serrano by F21 Cosmetics “. Now it stands simply as FS Cosmetics. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine and we discussed why this is so. Based on our deduction, we came to the conclusion that the cosmetic company might have used Fanny Serrano’s name for marketing purposes when it was launched into the market back in 2003. Over time, the brand has found its niche in the market and maybe due to the success of the line, the parties involved may not have come into terms when it was time to renew their contracts. That’s why it is now marketed as FS Cosmetics. Then again, this is just speculation on my part.

The packaging of this product has also changed. It still retains its round compact form. The see through cover has been changed into a full cover equipped with a mirror. Sponge is still included. The new packaging of the two-way cake is a step forward in terms of making it commercially viable. On a professional point of view, I liked the see-through cover better because I can see the colors of powder instantly.

The reason why I like recommending and using this product is because it provides build-able coverage. When using powder less is more. With this product, I advice to build the powder on your face slowly. Applying too much powder will give you a “thick” and “cake-y” appearance. It is similar to that of MAC’s Studio FX line. Whilst MAC’s Studio FX line can only be used dry, the FS two-way cake can be used wet or dry. My only qualm about the FS two-way cake is that the powder easily gets unbonded from the each other when I use a brush. It produces so much product excess that I find it wasteful. Unlike the powder foundations from MAC or Laura Mercier, as soon as I sweep my brush on top of the product, an ample amount of powder is picked up by the brush. No excess , no wastage.

One other reason why I like FS two-way cake is because of its color tone. I have noticed that most Filipinas purchase powdered compacts from drug store brands. I don’t have a problem with that except, most Filipinas want to appear “white” even if they are not. In addition to that, most powdered compacts come in one color, white. Remember, when the color of the powder that you use on is not your shade, you do not look white, but you look “ashy”. When one looks gray, one looks unhealthy! Plus, the mismatched color of your face and neck is not appealing at all. FS two-way cake has 7 colors available. It is a limited range but, the important thing is that they are yellow based. If a woman would be patient enough when choosing a shade, she’ll be able to get one that would closely match her skin tone.

The FS two-way cake line has a shade named Rajah. It is the darkest color of the range. I use it as a bronzing/contouring alternative because it has more red pigments iin it. I use this shade for contouring when creating a very natural makeup look. This product line is matte, so I do not worry about excessive shine as the day wears on.

I like things that smell good, and my nose automatically remembers scents that I like. The reason why I can’t forget about this product is because, it smells of vanilla and milk. I’m sure most girls would like to smell good. As a precaution though, only purchase this product if you are not allergic to any kind of fragrance!

This two-way cake aside from having Vitamin E, has an SPF rating of 35 due to the some mineral components* in the ingredients . To know more about sun screen and SPF click here to be brought to my previous blog.

Lastly it is very affordable. A compact retails at Php 399. I know that the price of this product places it in a specific market. But if you are like me who doesn’t really mind marketing ploys, this is a very effective product to use.

My very own FS Two-way cake sits comfortably in my Makeup kit between my MAC Studio FX and Laura Mercier foundation powders.

Skin Protection

Summer is around the corner. While it seems (as of this writing) that the weather is being a capricous flirt, the sun has been out the past few days reassuring us that the promise of summer is to come.

One should be prepared to face the sun with your best ally, sun screen.

I have heard many complaints from people who doesn’t want to use sun screen for the primary reason that it makes their skin “oily”. Second, they don’t like the “white cast” it leaves on the skin. Third, they couldn’t care less for sun screen.

Here’s the thing, aside from tiny beads of sweat coming out of your pores, if your sun screen of choice is making you appear “oily” , you are supposed to be assured that your skin is being protected. There are some formulas that are silicone or chemical based that creates a “barrier” on the skin, protecting it from the sun by absorbing and dissipating its harmful light.

If you have a “white cast” on your face or body, that is actually an active ingredient that helps protect your skin from the sun. This means that your sun screen of choice has mineral components. These mineral components (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) reflect the sun light off so that UV rays won’t penetrate deep into your skin. If you do not want to have a “white cast” on your face, change to a different formulation.

And if you don’t care less for sunscreen, well that’s your choice. An unintelligent one at that.

One other question is, what is SPF?

Based on my own research and understanding, SPF or Sun Protection Factor is an indication on how much time the sun screen protects you from burning. UVB rays is actually what causes our skin to burn. The SPF indicated on your sun screen protects you from UVB rays.

To let you understand SPF more, let me put it in simple mathematical terms.

I have observed that my skin burns in 10 mintues and the SPF on my sun screen is 70. When I apply my sun screen, it multiplies the time it takes before I get burned. So my sun screen gives me 700 minutes of extra protection before I burn. Now, I might be wrong with my calculation and I would appreciate someone telling me if I am off with this.

Choosing the right sun screen should be based on your life style and sun or light exposure. If you only go out for errands, then a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 would do. If you do sports, choose a sun screen with a higher SPF rating. And if you’re like me, a makeup artist who constantly work under the bright lights of the studio or on location, my sun screen of choice has an SPF of 70.

1623723_10152241153131661_173997997_nI use VMV Hypoallergenics ARMADA Sport SPF 70 . It is a full – spectrum sun screen with an SPF rating of 70 and a PFA rating of 10.

PFA means Protection Factor in UVA. VMV Hypoallergenics ARMADA Sport SPF 70 affords me ten times as much protection from UVA light than if I go with out this sun screen.

As we all know, UVA is more harmful than UVB because it actually penetrates deeper into the skin. UVA light is what makes our skin darker and long time exposure can lead to wrinkles, leathery skin and in some cases cancer.

ARMADA Sport is a silicone based sun screen, so this will not give you that “white cast” look.

The main reason why I love this product is because I do not get the burning sensation after frolicking on the beach under the sun. I spread a generous amount on my face (paying attention to the forehead), on my head (yes! so my scalp won’t burn), on my ears, my nape and on my shoulders. These are the parts of the body that get “hit” by the light of the sun in earnest, so it’s best to protect them.

I do not break out from this product. It is validated hypoallergenic, non-drying amd non-comeogenic.

For the rest of my body, I choose to use a cheaper brand of sun screen like Nivea. Frankly, Armada Sport is a bit expensive, that’s why I only use it in specific areas. This is the main reason why, the tan on my face is lighter than the tan I have all over my body.

Now, when buying sun screen (or any other product) ALWAYS read the literature or instructions written on the box or on the product itself. This will educate you on the right application process and on other needed instructions. If it says to apply sun screen 30 minutes before sun exposure, do it. Let this product help you help yourself by following instructions.

I do not believe some sun screens that say they are water proof because it will be washed off eventually. It is a very misleading piece of information and but a marketing ploy. Choose a sun screen that is water resistant, aside from the fact that is a much more viable fact, this product had to undergo testing required by the FDA. Be wary as well of sun screens that profess having an SPF of 100 because it sounds unrealistic and it cannot be claimed because of the logarithmic/mathematical nature of how these sun screens are tested.

If it is possible, avoid sun exposure  between 10 AM and 4 PM. The sun’s intensity peaks from 12 noon to 4 PM. If you cannot avoid the sun, just protect yourself with umbrellas, hats, caps and sun glasses. Speaking of sunglasses, I strongly believe that one should invest in dark glasses to protect ones eyes and under eyes from the sun. Remember that your under eyes has the thinnest layer of skin on your face. Extreme sun exposure can lead to crows feet and other signs of aging.

Now, if you have any further questions about sun screen, ask your dermatologist or a practicing professional in the field of skin care. They can give you more technical information that you might need. All that I have written here is based on my own research and understanding.

I will end this blog with a video made by Baz Luhrmann in 1999, its lyrics was originally written by Mary Schmich in an essay back in 1997.. it’s not only about sun screen but its about life in general.
